Preparation

  1. Serving size:
    7.50 oz (calculated)
    Notes: 2 cheesecake rollup slices, each about 1 in or 2.5 cm thick with a diameter of about 2 inches or 5 cm
  1. Pound the steak out to a thickness of about 1/4 inch (6 mm). Alternatively, if you can get it, use very thinly-cut top round (Milanese cut).
  2. Season the meat with salt and pepper.
  3. In a pan over medium heat, melt the butter and chopped onion, bell pepper and mushrooms for about 5 minutes.
  4. Season to taste.
  5. Remove the vegetables from the pan. Do not clean the pan yet, you can use the excess butter to cook the cheese steaks.
  6. Spread the vegetables over the prepared steak, leaving a border all around free. Like this, the filling won't spill out as easily when rolling up the steak.
  7. Top with the sliced cheese. You can use other cheeses, too. If you like it extra cheesy, use thicker slices or use two or three instead.
  8. Roll into a pinwheel and secure it with toothpicks or metal skewers, one for each section about 2 to 3 inches (5 cm to 7.5 cm) thick.
  9. Cut the pinwheels into portions.
  10. Cook the pinwheels on the cut-side over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes, depending on the thickness.
  11. Then cook the pinwheels on the meat sides, first top and bottom, each 3 to 4 minutes.
  12. Remove the skewers and also cook on the other two sides, again 3 to 4 minutes each.
  13. Cut in half and finish on the cut sides until done.
  14. Serve drizzled with the fat from the pan and a side of vegetables, for example green beans.
